Purpose of Job

Plan and execute comprehensive program to build and sustain support for Sasol among key external stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop policies, procedures, processes, and protocols to govern site-based, local government/industry relations that are consistent with Sasol Group policies and comply with all legal requirements.
  • Identify, prioritize, and manage Sasol’s relationships with key stakeholders within local governments and industry trade groups. Develop and execute an annual plan for engaging these stakeholders.
  • Work with Sasol business divisions, operations, SHE, legal and regulatory affairs to identify fenceline community, legislative and regulatory issues with the potential to impact Sasol’s business in the country.
  • Develop positions to address these issues, advocate for these positions, and advise senior management on appropriate courses of action.
  • Manage key stakeholder engagements re: specific regulatory processes, working with appropriate internal issue owners and subject matter experts.
  • Assist in selecting and managing the work of federal and state/provincial contract lobbyists.
  • Manage Sasol’s relationship with South Africa’s respective in-country embassy. Work with Sasol counterparts in South Africa to plan and manage bilateral engagements between the country and South African governments related to Sasol’s interests in both countries.
  • Identify key provincial/state, national and international industry and business associations with which Sasol should engage, determine engagement level, and represent Sasol with the country/regional organizations.
  • Work with trade/industry associations, as appropriate, to advocate Sasol’s positions with country/regional governments.
  • Manage Sasol’s relationship with local/regional media both proactively and reactively, in coordination with Corporate Communications. Serve as Sasol media contact and spokesperson with these local media outlets.
  • Manage Sasol local executive engagements with key stakeholders, including the preparation of speeches and presentations.
  • Work with management at Sasol’s in-country sites to engage with governments, as necessary.
  • Manage Sasol’s relationships with in-country NGOs, advocacy groups, think tanks, and other third parties.
  • Serve as a member of the International Chemicals Global GAPA Leadership Team
  • Serve as a member of the Sasol Corporate Affairs crisis communications team.
  • Liaise with Sasol Group Corporate Affairs on external engagements activities as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Formal Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, public relations, public policy, government or related field

Working Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience in public and government affairs

Required Skills/Experience

  • Fluency in English and German (written and spoken)
  • Demonstrable experience implementing and executing a successful corporate government relations program at the local and national levels
  • Demonstrable experience implementing and executing a successful industry relations program and representing employer in key industry trade associations
  • Demonstrable experience planning and executing a strategic media relations program
  • Chemicals and/or energy industries experience preferred
  • Experience working in a global organization desirable
  • Public affairs/lobbying agency experience strongly preferred
  • Must be, or be willing to register as, a lobbyist if required by law in the jurisdiction
  • Supervisory experience
  • Budgeting and program planning experience

Competencies

  • Extensive communication skills, with the ability to succinctly convey business issues to policymakers and government issues to internal clients
  • Concise and persuasive writing skills, with the ability to construct policy positions that comprehensively relay complex business issues
  • Comprehensive knowledge of in-country legislative and regulatory processes
  • Consistent awareness of legislative or regulatory proposals with potential impact on industry or business activities
  • Ability to quickly and effectively analyze legislative or regulatory proposals
  • Ability to prioritize legislative and regulatory proposals effectively
  • Demonstrated willingness to collaborate with other functions and business units
  • Experience working within as well as managing teams, including contract lobbyists
  • Comprehension of in-country lobbying reporting requirements, gift, and pay-to-play rules
  • Experience working with industry trade groups and alliances and working collaboratively with industry peers to advance common legislative/regulatory goals
  • High ethical standards
