Purpose of the Job

The Market Analyst supports strategic decision-making by monitoring international trade, competitive dynamics, and global supply–demand developments across Sasol’s Alcohols and Technical Formulations portfolio. The role maintains a comprehensive global supply and demand model and translates data into clear insights and recommendations that guide marketing, investment, and portfolio optimisation decisions. The Market Analyst combines strong analytical capability with the ability to tell the story behind the data - supporting quick, effective business decisions and ensuring commercial teams are informed with timely, relevant market intelligence.

 

This position can be based in Germany (Hamburg or Brunsbuettel), Houston or in Italy (Milan, Augusta, Sarroch or Terranova).

Key Accountabilities

Market and Trade Intelligence

  • Monitor and analyse global trade flows, import/export trends, and price movements for alcohols, surfactants, and related intermediates.
  • Track competitive developments, including new capacity announcements, plant closures, and product shifts among key global producers and customers.
  • Provide regular market intelligence summaries highlighting significant shifts in supply, demand, and pricing.
  • Continually track and share relevant market data, insights, and data sources with the commercial teams to strengthen market awareness and responsiveness.

Global Supply and Demand Modelling

  • Maintain and refine a global alcohols supply–demand balance model by region, product family, and end-use segment.
  • Integrate external datasets (trade statistics, capacity databases, industry publications) and internal inputs (sales, production, and marketing data).
  • Use the model to identify market opportunities and risks that inform marketing strategies, investment/disposal decisions, and production planning.

Data Analysis and Insight Generation

  • Develop and automate dashboards and visual analytics using Power BI or similar tools.
  • Interpret market and trade data to support fast, evidence-based decision-making.
  • Present complex information in concise, visually engaging formats for senior leadership and commercial stakeholders. Strategic and Financial Support.

Strategic and Financial Support

  • Support business cases for investment, capacity expansion, or divestment through quantitative market and margin analysis.
  • Contribute to the long-range plan (LRP) and strategy reviews by providing updated market outlooks.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Business Intelligence, and Product Line teams to ensure market views are consistent with commercial priorities.

Storytelling and Communication

  • Translate data into actionable narratives that highlight market risks, opportunities, and implications.
  • Communicate findings through well-structured presentations and reports that enable confident, timely decisions.
  • Act as a bridge between technical analysis and commercial strategy by clearly articulating the “so what” behind the data.

Formal Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Business, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • A postgraduate qualification is advantageous.

Working Experience

  • 5–8 years of relevant working experience in market analysis, business intelligence, or strategy roles, preferably within the chemical, energy, or commodities sectors

Required Personal and Professional Skills

  • Strong analytical and quantitative capability with a high degree of accuracy and data integrity
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Excel, and data visualisation or statistical tools
  • Good understanding of international trade data and industry databases (e.g., IHS, GTA, ICIS)
  • Strong storytelling and presentation skills—ability to turn data into meaningful insights that inform strategy
  • Commercial awareness and sound judgement in interpreting market trends
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages an advantage
  • Collaborative and proactive mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
