Purpose of Job

The Senior Compliance Officer is accountable and responsible for assisting and supporting the business units/operating hubs/functions in complying with the regulatory requirements (laws, regulations, and supervisory requirements (rules, codes, and self-regulatory organization standards) applicable to it by facilitating the implementation, management, and maintenance of the compliance methodology and execute compliance responsibilities on a global level.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Develop a strong understanding of the strategy, operations and key risks of allocated business units and ensure effective implementation and maintenance of the compliance methodology, including regulatory analysis and reporting, compliance treatment and support for compliance monitoring.
  • Identify and assess applicable compliance risks and ensure business unit risk profiles and compliance work plans align with Group Compliance Services directives and standards.
  • Support business units, operating hubs and functions in meeting global regulatory requirements (laws, regulations, supervisory rules, codes and standards) by facilitating implementation and ongoing management of compliance processes.
  • Assist the Board and management in fulfilling their legislative, regulatory and supervisory compliance responsibilities.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance processes are implemented within Business Units and Corporate Functions to enable effective compliance risk management.
  • Stay abreast of global regulatory developments and legislative changes; proactively create awareness of compliance risk management through training and advisory services.
  • Ensure compliance risk mitigating measures are identified and implemented, and that compliance processes, structures, policies and procedures are developed, maintained and embedded in the Sasol compliance culture.
  • Provide support and assistance to the Senior Manager: Group Compliance and develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders.
  • Handle ad-hoc compliance queries and provide compliance advice on policy requirements, the regulatory control environment and ways to minimize the impact of compliance exposures. Lead and support Compliance Officers reporting into this role.
  • Analyse current, emerging and amended regulatory requirements and update the regional regulatory universe annually. Support Business Units in developing their specific regulatory universes and provide input into draft regulatory requirements.
  • Review new business developments for regulatory compliance and advise line management on the impact of regulatory requirements.
  • Support subject matter experts on legislative and regulatory amendments; track global and regional regulatory trends, monitor issues and escalate long-outstanding compliance exposures.
  • Facilitate workshops with Business Units to develop Compliance Risk Profiles in partnership with Legal and Risk, and assist with drafting reports to governance structures.
  • Support Compliance Treatment activities (e.g. CRMPs, CCFs) including development or peer review as required.
  • Lead and guide Compliance Officers/direct reports to deliver high-quality, customer-focused and timely compliance services; identify their training needs and ensure they have the requisite knowledge and skills.
  • Manage direct reports, including performance agreements, appraisals, recognition of good performance and addressing poor performance, while promoting high performance and driving deliverables in line with Sasol values.

Formal Education

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent law degree
  • Admitted Attorney

Working Experience

 

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant working experience (required)
  • 7 years’ experience in the Compliance field (preferred)

Required Personal and Professional Skills

 

  • Familiarity with US and international anti-bribery and corruption law, trade compliance, antitrust/competition law, data privacy laws, etc. ideally with compliance experience working in a chemical company.
  • Good presentation skills with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Excellent management skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and to manage multi-task, multi-deadline projects effectively and on time.
