Purpose of Job
To lead and manage the Laboratory and Processing Engineering teams in support of production operations. The role ensures delivery of agreed production volumes at optimal cost and quality, while maintaining safety, health, and environmental standards. The manager provides technical direction, drives continuous improvement, and fosters a high-performance culture across laboratory, processing, and production teams.
Key Accountabilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership
Develop and cascade production plans aligned with business strategy and operational goals.
Manage and optimize laboratory and processing operations to meet production targets efficiently and safely.
Lead the implementation of systematic business processes across teams and stakeholders.
Laboratory & Processing Oversight
Ensure accurate and timely analysis of production samples and maintain high standards of laboratory quality control.
Guide processing engineers in troubleshooting, optimizing, and improving production processes.
Maintain mass balance accuracy and take immediate corrective and preventive actions when deviations occur.
Continuous Improvement & Technical Support
Identify and implement improvement opportunities across laboratory and processing functions.
Lead process-related investigations and promote organizational learning to prevent recurrence.
Support production teams with technical solutions and process optimization strategies.
Risk, Safety & Compliance
Manage operational risks by identifying, analysing, and mitigating them to maintain license to operate.
Implement Sasol’s risk philosophy and enterprise risk management framework.
Financial & Resource Management
Compile and monitor annual production and volume budgets to ensure cost control.
Contribute to workforce planning and budgeting to optimize staffing and operational efficiency.
People Leadership & Development
Promote feedback, on-the-job training, and succession planning to build team capability.
Encourage cross-functional collaboration and inclusive engagement across all levels.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 8years of experience in oil & gas operations or other relevant field, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory practices, analytical techniques, and process engineering principles.
- Experience with industry standards such as ASTM, ISO, and API.
- Proven leadership and team management skills.
