Purpose of Job
The Manager SHE Wells and Pipelines position oversees all explorations activities, namely, demining, seismic lines opening, Seismic data acquisition and the drilling and commissioning (completion and appraisal) of new wells and respective flowlines. The position oversees the maintenance and operation of existing gas infrastructure, including producing and non-producing well pads/sites, Pande Trunkline, producing and non-producing wells in Pande and Inhassoro, the MSP export pipeline (within Mozambique). The incumbent must have sufficient oil and gas (upstream) experience, with Process Safety and Contractor Management experience. The position will be located in Temane and is accountable for establishing Wells and Pipelines SHE goals, priorities, and key performance measures globally.
Key Accountabilities
- Define Wells & Pipelines (W&P) SHE goals, priorities, and key performance measures globally.
- Implement W&P Management Strategy, plans, procedures, practices and for all related activities.
- Ensure application of the One Sasol SHE Excellence Approach (OSSEA).
- Define High Severity Incident (HSI) Reduction program, ensure implementation, tracking and reporting.
- Define SHE Game Plan, ensure implementation, tracking and reporting.
- Ensure bow ties are customised, and the assurance is provided on all critical controls and other applicable elements of the HSI program.
- Perform overall contractor management, actively managing output in accordance to standards, requirements, gate deliverables and assurance.
- Drive risk reduction and control high risk activities on a daily basis.
- Develop specific SHE emergency response plans and align with CPF/IPF existing ERP.
- Ensures SHE goals and priorities for W&P are fully aligned with corporate ones.
- Oversee and monitor the effectiveness and quality of SHE programs.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to fully implement SHE certification across operations, in line with Group Directives develop W&P SHE management system.
- Ensure W&P operates in alignment with Group and ROAS SHE standards, policies and code of practice for safe working.
- Contribute to effective risk management of SHE related issues by providing specialist knowledge and advice on key business decisions to leadership team.
- Develop SHE KPIs to ensure W&P continuous improvement (yearly).
- Report and analyse all aspects of SHE performance for key stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement and behavioural change.
- Contribute to monitor progress and plans, and executes SHE related projects.
- Guide, motivate and develop direct/indirect SHE Team within HR policies.
- Provide a monthly SHE performance report to the Senior Manager and Vice President SHE ROAS.
- Manage the incident notification, investigation and reporting process for W&P operations and projects.
- Timely notify SHE incidents, take ownership of investigations, lessons learned, preventive and corrective actions and KPIs.
- Close incident investigations to meet the SASOL requirements.
- Demonstrate lessons learnt adoption from incident investigations.
- Develop corrective action processes to ensure all lessons learned are implemented and closed out.
- Participate in team discussions investigating Key Undesirable Events.
Key Accountabilities (Continue)
- Oversees SHE audits in support of W&P policies, SASOL and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate the creation and maintenance of W&P SHE audit programme.
- Assist in assurance, audits and inspections schedules for Rig and operational support locations.
- Ensure audit team undertakes annual rig and pipelines inspection.
- Implements a combined assurance plan.
- Support the administration of ROAS and Corporate Well Control and Oil Spill Response contracts.
- Prepare and attend the Business and Operational Performance Reviews for the Well Control and Oil Spill Response contracts.
- Ensure all drills are implemented as per annual KPIs and ERP.
- Supervises all W&P SHE personnel
- Ensure delivery of training, audit and support for key risk programs are optimized through and delivered.
- Develop and ensure competent Regional SHE Specialists.
- Maintain full contingent of competent field SHE personnel.
- Coach, support and provide advice to Management Team on SHE matters.

- The ability to understand and integrate complex and conflicting needs and priorities in support of 24/7 operations, is imperative.

- Performance will be measured on achievement of project SHE objectives including the relevant, auditable requirements of PPA, PSA, PT5C and other license areas.
Formal Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field, SHE or Engineering (preferably Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation).
- A post-graduate degree in SHE / or (M.Sc Eng, M.Eng) in Engineering or Business Administration (MBA) is an advantage.
- NEBOSH International HSE certificate in Occupational Safety Management is desirable.
Working Experience
- Minimum of 10-12 years’ experience in industrial operations.
- At least 7-10 years' SHE/OHS experience working at a senior level in regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and safety management, or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant military experience.
- Preferred 5 years+ experience in SHE leadership position in Oil and Gas industry.
- Demonstrated experience of leading and developing a team or teams of employees in a matrix organization.
- Demonstrated strong skills and experience in health, safety and environmental management.
- Strong and pro-active communicator.
- Fluent English (written and spoken).
- Ability and willingness to travel as required.
- Proven track record of SHE continuous Improvement.
- Working experience with exploration operations in remote locations onshore and offshore.
- Working experience in Africa.
- Must demonstrate experience developing a SHE management system and ERP.
- Conversant with usual business suites (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Etc.).
- Awareness / proficiency in the use of some process safety management and risk assessment toolsets, such as: BowTie XP, TapRoot®, etc.
