Purpose of Job

The Well Engineer is responsible for well planning, design and programming and for providing engineering support during execution of Sasol rig and ringless campaigns. The role reports into the Lead Well Engineering.

 

Key Accountabilities

Rig campaign

Preparation

  • Contribute to Field Basis of Well Design specifying well types in terms of drilling, wellhead and Xmas tree, cementing, fluids, lower completion, upper completion, well testing, and well lifecycle considerations – in close collaboration with Subsurface Well Services, Surface Facilities and Early Civils;
  • Compile Well Operations Manual incl. drilling, completions, well testing operations per well type;
  • Provide technical input in tendering for all equipment and services;
  • Prepare FR2, FR3, FR4, FR5 submissions and specify LLIs for all wells;

Execution

  • Participate in campaign mobilization planning and execution;
  • Contribute to developing and optimizing rig schedule;
  • Run / support well operations as per Functional Outputs (see below);
  • Act as Contract Holder for assigned contract(s) – manage supplier performance;
  • Closeout campaign with EOWRs and AARs capturing Lessons Learnt.


Rigless campaign

Preparation

  • Review all shut-in wells to identify candidates for rigless workovers and P&As in close collaboration with Subsurface;
  • Compile technical scope for tendering a long-term rigless solution (unit or spread);
  • Assist in tendering and awarding the rigless solution contract(s).

Execution

  • Participate in campaign mobilization planning and execution;
  • Contribute to developing and optimizing rigless schedule;
  • Run / support well operations as per Functional Outputs (see below);
  • Act as Contract Holder for assigned contract(s) – manage supplier performance;
  • Closeout campaign with EOWRs and AARs capturing Lessons Learnt.

 

Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities: Functional Outputs 

  • Prepare all well documentation including the Basis for Well Design, conceptual and detailed design documents, risk registers, time and cost estimates for AFE creation, Well Programmes and contingency plans;
  • Protection of the Environment, Health and Safety in accordance with Company policies and procedures;
  • Specify and select all equipment to meet the well needs in compliance with company standards and subsurface and asset objectives;
  • Ensure integrity and compliance of drilling, completion, and well testing designs as well as rig-based and rig-less P& A and workover designs and programmes with all applicable legislation and company standards;
  • Work in a manner which ensures good, open communication and collaboration, promoting a culture of involvement and participation by all parties concerned;
  • Provide technical engineering support during operations;
  • Monitor and measure operations performance to identify and implement improvement initiatives and monitor their effectiveness;
  • Effective liaison and communication with all applicable parties involved in well programmes e.g. Well Delivery peers, subsurface, subcontractors;
  • Monitor service delivery performance of assigned drilling contracts;
  • Maintain Well Delivery project plans in coordination with the Project Execution Plan and contribute to weekly and monthly reports;
  • Utilise lessons learnt system and performance improvement initiatives;
  • Prepare the final well report include performance and lessons learnt analysis;
  • Prepare and coordinate workshops and milestone meetings in accordance with Well Delivery Process;
  • Manage well documentation and data in line with Company policy;
  • Provide Well Delivery duty cover as required;
  • Support Well Delivery service and equipment tender process including preparation of scope of work and technical evaluation of submitted Tenders
  • Research and promotion of innovative and best practice techniques to optimize well construction performance.

 

Minimum requirements

 

  • University Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering/Science);
  • Valid Well Control Certificate IWCF Level 4 (IWCF Level 5 desirable);
  • Well Engineering competency certification e.g. Shell Round II, RPG WEC or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a broad range of job functions covering drilling, completion, well testing, well integrity, and well operations;
  • Upstream petroleum industry experience; well engineering experience essential, but also knowledge of production, geology, reservoir engineer disciplines desirable;
  • Competent user of at least one module of the Landmark Suite well engineering software;
  • Competent user of P1 probabilistic well cost estimating software;
  • Competent user of WellView reporting and database software;
  • Awareness of the WellBarrier software;
  • Understanding of commercial drivers and impact of well engineering activities on field development economics and understanding of geological and petroleum engineering priorities;
  • Operational experience in drilling, completions, testing, workovers, and rigless operations;
  • Experience of operations in locations with challenging logistical issues;
  • Experience working in geographically dispersed teams;
  • Experience of a wide range of well engineering activities including the planning and execution of different well designs; exploration, appraisal, development, deviated, horizontal and multi-lateral;
  • Planning and operational experience of exploration and development projects in remote and developing African countries;
  • Experience in developing and tracking well budgets and driving cost optimization;
  • Team player with cultural empathy and professional integrity;
  • Evidence of delivering well campaigns within Budget, Schedule, SHE and Quality targets;
  • Fluency in written and spoken use of the English and Portuguese languages is required; working knowledge of other languages would be an advantage;
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills;
  • Deep understanding and buy-in of SHE good practices;
  • A rigorous understanding of Well Engineering technical principles;
  • Technical confidence and independence to progress tasks with minimal supervision;
  • Familiarity with API, OEUK, NORSOK, AER and other recognized industry standards & recommended practices would be beneficial;
  • Knowledge of regulations applicable to the Oil and Gas Industry in Mozambique.
