Purpose of Job

  • The Regional Data Privacy Officer Africa will report into the Chief Privacy Officer (within the  Privacy, AI and Access to Information Centre of Expertise) and will be supporting Sasol’s African operations (including but not limited, to South Africa and Mozambique).
  • Address all privacy related issues and risks for Africa.
  • Support the Group Data Privacy Office in the establishment, creation, development and maintenance of international privacy best practice controls for Sasol Group as a whole.
  • Establish, create and develop privacy controls specifically and exclusively applicable to Africa.
  • Guide various legal entities within the Operating Model Entities (OMEs) in Africa with the appropriate implementation of developed privacy controls.
  • Own monitoring of compliance with established privacy controls (to confirm that they are adequate and working effectively – spot checks and formal audit).
  • Advise the Compliance Function as required for their monitoring of compliance with established privacy controls, and act as a relevant privacy contact person for Africa on related queries, enquiries and privacy subject matter expertise (both internal and external to the organisation).
  • Provide African privacy law advisory services to Sasol in Africa and other regions (Eurasia, US), as required, and report to the Sasol Group Privacy Office on all privacy related and relevant issues that may be or could possibly affect Africa.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain privacy strategies, policies, standards and procedures.
  • Design and implementation of privacy controls in business processes.
  • Support Sasol with privacy related issues.
  • Provide information and guidance on the processing of personal data.
  • Establish records of processing activities and educate data owners on their responsibilities (what is personal data, how is it used, who has access to it, etc).
  • Support the OMEs in maintaining data inventories and data flow maps as necessary.
  • Lead privacy compliance initiatives.
  • Lead investigations into privacy incidents/breaches under applicable privacy laws impacting Sasol’s African operations and undertake reporting/remedial action as required. Maintain a log of any incidents and remedial recommendations and actions.
  • Lead and manage privacy complaints and data subject requests.
  • Interpret and provide guidance to the Group Privacy Office on forthcoming and actual changes to relevant legislation on Africa privacy matters.
  • Provide privacy awareness and training initiatives.
  • Provide privacy advisory services within Africa and to the rest of the Sasol Group, as required.
  • Provide feedback to regulators within Africa as specified by applicable legislation.
  • Develop, implement and maintain privacy management tools (e.g., OneTrust).
  • Ensure that privacy impact and risk assessments are carried out for all new systems, projects or work flows.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to OMEs in Africa by being the expert for data privacy in Africa.
  • Ensure that quality services are delivered - service level commitments are met.
  • Drive cost management, high performance culture, shareholder value and partnerships, risk and compliance.
  • Effectively and efficiently drive operation of privacy services within Africa.
  • Deliver privacy projects on schedule, in budget and at necessary quality.
  • Manage and respond to requests under access to information laws such as the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA).
  • Compile any outgoing PAIA requests on behalf of Sasol.
  • Guide Sasol’s Africa-based OMEs (and global OMEs, where relevant) regarding the implementation of global artificial intelligence (AI) governance best practice controls in accordance with applicable AI governance laws, regulations and frameworks.
  • Conduct privacy impact and risk assessments on new AI use cases and systems, and collaborate with OMEs to ensure the lawful and responsible use of AI technologies within Sasol.
  • Monitor and interpret evolving privacy and AI laws, regulations and compliance requirements, and assess impact to Sasol’s Africa-based operations.
  • Contribute to staff training, competence and knowledge sharing.
  • Strong decision-making capabilities, with a proven ability to weigh the relative costs and benefits of potential actions and identify the most appropriate one.
  • Motivate, influence, communicate and manage stakeholder engagement at all levels in the organisation.
  • Cultivate and build collaborative working relationships with a broad range of enterprise stakeholders.
  • Advise the Group Compliance Services function as required for their monitoring of compliance with established privacy (and AI governance) controls.
  • Liaise with mandatory Sasol Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and first-line Privacy Champions, and act as in-country DPO where no mandatory DPO is required.

Formal Education

  • University Bachelor’s Degree (minimum LLB or equivalent Law degree from an accredited tertiary institution).

Working Experience

  • Minimum 9 (nine) years’ relevant experience, and relevant privacy management and compliance experience.
  • Minimum 3 (three) years’ practical privacy program management and privacy control implementation experience.

Certification & Professional Membership

  • Privacy Practitioner Certification (e.g., IAPP – International Association of Privacy Professionals).
