Purpose of Job
Provide technical support to maintenance managers and engineers by applying theoretical skills and making suggestions and independently implementing solutions to optimise systems.
Key Accountabilities
- DCS and PLC systems
- Standalone single loop controllers
- Anti-Surge and Speed Control Systems
- Emergency Shutdown systems
- Burner management and flame detection systems
- SMART instrumentation and bus systems
- Understand P&ID and Instrument loop drawings
- Project Handling Experience
- SAP: Maintenance and Materials management & Purchasing
- Hazardous installations in petrochemical industry.
Required outputs: Technical
- Configuration and repair of instrumentation and systems.
- Configuration and repair of Anti-Surge, Speed Control, ESD and PLC Systems.
- Verify designs for instruments – new and modifications on Instruments in production plants.
- Ensure that Instruments designs and subsequent installations comply with OHS Act requirements.
- Design and/or verify PLC, DCS, and Shutdown Safety Systems and protection schemes.
- Investigate and implement new technologies to improve the reliability of Instruments and quality of measurement within the refinery.
- Liaise with Vendors and other Sasol BU’s to improve the quality of instrument installations and measurements.

- Contribute to Effective Maintenance Strategies
- Assist with planning and executing of Shutdown system tests.
- Managing Unit shutdown plans – instrumentation.
- Project management execution
- Coaching and leading artisan team
Required outputs: Area team
- Technical Support to area team.
- Assist with area team fault finding and incident investigation initiatives
- Support area team goals and actions.
Required outputs: General
- Must apply innovative and creative abilities to solve technical problems.
- Source and Procure Equipment.
- Co-ordinating and negotiating with commercial department, suppliers, contractors and consultants.
- Budget Control.
- Development and Training assistance to colleagues.
- Organise and chair meetings
Formal Education
- National Diploma (Electrical-Light current/ Instrumentation & Control)
- Instrument Mechanician Trade Test will be an added advantage
Working Experience
5+ years’ experience in Instrumentation & Control in the refinery environment, or in the petrochemical environment at least
