Purpose of Job

To coordinate, control and execute surface surveying activities for Sasol Mining operations, ensuring that all survey-related work complies with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant statutory requirements.

The role is responsible for managing surface spatial data, stockpile measurements, drone-based aerial surveys, and survey networks, ensuring accurate positioning of infrastructure, reliable mineral rights management, and compliance with regulatory and governance requirements.

Key Accountabilities

Surface Survey Management

Execute mineral rights and surface survey requirements including:

  • Prospecting and exploration boreholes
  • Rescue boreholes
  • Surface subsidence monitoring
  • Servitudes and infrastructure services
  • Rehabilitation surveys
  • Water monitoring and supply infrastructure
  • Monitoring of surface structures and infrastructure
  • Liaison with surface rights owners and stakeholders

Assist with undermining applications and surface erection permissions in line with regulatory requirements.

Survey Control and Spatial Data Management

Coordinate and control surface surveying activities to ensure that:

  • Surface structures and infrastructure are accurately captured and recorded on statutory mine plans
  • Planned structures are correctly positioned and aligned on site
  • Survey data is verified before critical operational decisions are made

Establish and maintain survey control networks for new shafts, ventilation shafts and infrastructure developments.

Drone and Survey Technology Management

Manage drone-based aerial surveying operations to support:

  • Surface mapping and infrastructure monitoring
  • Stockpile volumetric measurements
  • Rehabilitation verification
  • Surface monitoring and spatial data collection

Ensure drone operations comply with SACAA regulations, Sasol governance requirements and safety standards.

Stockpile Measurement and Reconciliation

Achieve accurate stockpile calculations and reconciliation by:

  • Measuring coal stockpiles at SCS and Export plants
  • Executing volumetric calculations using survey and drone technologies
  • Supporting governance of coal sales to Synfuels through accurate stock reporting

Ensure compliance with internal governance and audit requirements.

Equipment and Cost Control

Achieve equipment integrity targets by:

  • Managing survey equipment procurement and maintenance
  • Ensuring availability and reliability of survey instrumentation
  • Controlling operational costs within the departmental budget

Legal Compliance and Governance

Ensure compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) requirements by:

  • Coordinating and controlling activities of survey personnel
  • Ensuring survey work adheres to statutory regulations and standards
  • Maintaining accurate statutory plans and survey records

Participate in audits, inspections and governance reviews.

Key Accountabilities Continuation

Safety Leadership

Promote and maintain a Zero Harm culture by:

  • Conducting Planned Task Observations (PTOs)
  • Performing risk assessments
  • Leading safety talks and safety indabas
  • Embedding Safe Making Behaviour in daily operations

Monitoring and Reporting

Ensure accurate and timely reporting by:

  • Compiling daily production survey reports for management monitoring
  • Supporting month-end production bonus calculations and SAP inputs
  • Conducting monthly water measurements (dams, monitoring holes and spoil discharges where applicable)

Stakeholder Engagement

Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including:

  • Shaft management and operational teams
  • Geology and planning departments
  • Service and support functions
  • Surface rights owners, contractors and suppliers

Ensure service level agreements are maintained and customer satisfaction targets are achieved.

Continuous Improvement and Industry Alignment

Drive continuous improvement by:

  • Optimizing survey processes and reporting accuracy
  • Supporting reserve optimization and final measurements in collaboration with geology
  • Enhancing 3D spatial modelling capabilities
  • Staying current with industry developments by attending IMSSA meetings and professional forums

Formal Education

BTech / Advanced Diploma in Surveying or related discipline

Certification & Professional Membership

Professional affiliation with IMSSA or relevant surveying body is advantageous.
