Purpose of Job
Using authoritative level of experience in Instrumentation and Control engineering to: Support operations by means of applying control engineering skills to solve challenging problems. This includes controller simulation, design, implementation, end-user training and post implementation support, as well as support to projects in accordance with established principles and standards to satisfy business requirements. Guide and manage stakeholders, providing technical direction on control strategies, control relating to RCAs, Hazops, controller health, HMI (human machine interface) graphics, alarm health and alarm management configuration changes in support of meaningful alarms and provision of related operator training. Support to develop and maintain critical competency and guide talent development of team members to have job specific knowledge in all areas of process control, process automation systems and instrumentation including critical control information infrastructure by ensuring correct competencies are available.
Key Accountabilities
Broad base of instrumentation and control engineering knowledge and competence relating to:
• Control and safety systems – DCS, PLC and ESD • Technology selection and installation practices for field equipment i.e. primary-, secondary- and final element devices. • HMI design and governance • Alarm management and alarm rationalisation. • Control loop analysis and process controller troubleshooting • Configuring control strategies on Honeywell TDC 2000, TDC 3000 and Experion systems. • Safety Instrumented Systems, Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and associated standards. • Develop and execute (conceptual, basic & detailed engineering and commissioning) instrumentation and control engineering scope for small to medium multi-discipline projects. • Proficiency in root cause analysis, HAZOPs and functional safety SIL reviews. • Obsolescence and risk-based asset management planning. • Manage the relationship with internal and external service providers applicable to function/discipline. • Develop and maintain work standards and ensure it is met according to quality, quantity and due dates. • Develop, maintain and manage the discipline specific systems, tools, policies and procedures for the execution of projects. • Ensure adherence and compliance to Sasol safety system and culture. • Support team members to have expert knowledge on area specific equipment like e.g transmitters and control valves to be able to maximise availability and production outputs. • Ensure good working relationship with all stake holders especially with instrumentation and control fraternity as well as plant production and maintenance personnel. • Liaise with external engineering companies to share in knowledge and benchmark. • Plan support resources against short and long term objectives. • Pilot and test plant modifications executed correctly with high quality. • Ensure compliance with legal requirements, policies and standards. • Manage of discipline specific project risks. • Ensure quality control of delivered services. • Adhere and provide input to Sasol specifications and Engineering standards. • Ensure governance regarding proposed modifications. • Drive initiatives which improves delivery and competitiveness. • Interpret and translate business requirements into an engineering strategy to enable OME to safely meet production targets. • Facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation. • Be responsible for own performance management. • Report on budget utilisation, forecasting and changes. • Ensure safety objectives and required training is completed. • Provide efficient and high quality services to stakeholders. • Maintain healthy and stable relationships with contractors and consultants. • Active practicing of interpersonal skills to ensure productive working relationships and to work with, or through, others internal and/or external the organisation to get work accomplished. • Display influencing, negotiating, maturity and emotional intelligence.
Formal Education
B Eng / BSc Eng Chemical or Electronic Engineering
M Eng / MSc Eng Control Engineering (Wish)
ECSA registration as Pr Eng (Strong Wish)
