Purpose of Job
With profitability in mind, an advanced process control engineer seeks to optimise and improve efficiency of the production process by first analysing an existing system and then by developing and implementing changes within it by different means, including statistical data analysis, process modelling, inferential development, advanced regulatory control, multivariable model predictive control and information technology.
Key Accountabilities
• Understand and analyse designated process area by studying and monitoring production performance and identify improvement opportunities on both a process and plant-wide scale • Consult with process engineering and production colleagues to get alignment, identify requirements or to prioritise opportunities • Apply analytical skills to support root cause analysis • Support production on daily problem solving related to process automation and advanced control in co-operation with plant maintenance • Develop key inferentials using statistical or first principle modelling techniques and implement using programming skills to support improvement goals • Use sound engineering to ensure high integrity signals are used for control purposes • Design, develop, implement and maintain advanced control solutions according to established engineering principles • Prioritise and plan all control related projects to address business requirements. • Interpret and translate business requirements into an engineering strategy. • Ensure good working relationship with all stake holders especially with the instrumentation and control fraternity as well as plant production and maintenance personnel to ensure sustained benefit of solutions. • Active practicing of interpersonal skills to ensure productive working relationships and to work with, or through, others inside and/or outside (including suppliers) the organisation to get work accomplished. • Oversee the management and safety of external service providers. Manage the service contracts in the budget applicable to function being managed. • Liaise with external engineering companies to share in knowledge and benchmark on best • practices. • Ensure compliance with legal, safety and operational reliability requirements. • Review Sasol policies for applicability and implementation. • Adhere and provide input to Sasol specifications and Engineering standards. • Demonstrate One Sasol way behaviour – ensure area under control is managed to the benefit to the larger Sasol value chain. • Ensure teams safety objectives and required training is completed. • Adhere to work standards and ensure it is met according to quality, quantity and due dates. • Follow governance for plant modifications and manage discipline specific project risks • Ensure quality of design, EOJ documentation etc.

• Develop, maintain and manage the discipline specific systems, tools, policies and procedures for the execution of projects. • Be responsible for own as well as team's performance management system. • Report on budget utilization, forecasting and changes. • Manage discipline specific project tasks. • Perform quality control of delivered services. • Record and incorporate lessons learnt per project. • Provide high quality reporting to stakeholders (i.e. Month end controller performance reports, engineering design documentation, incident investigation reports etc) • Contribute in the translation and execution of the technical support strategy. • Translate and cascade goals and long-term plans through effective two-way communication in the organisation. • Take responsibility to drive initiatives which improves delivery and competitiveness. • Ensure correct resource allocation and indicate timeously resourcing needs towards the execution of projects and support to operations. • Facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation. • Continuously update own knowledge and skills in order to maintain up-to-date knowledge of changing technologies and to ensure critical competencies and expertise are developed. • Pilot and test relevant technology to improve Sasol operations by maximising availability and production outputs. • Ensure personal development plans are completed, implemented and tracked within applicable career path. • Be responsible for own performance management. • Manage engineering knowledge by transforming, packaging, transferring and maintaining • knowledge. • Develop technical and engineering skills of EITs through coaching. • Manage and develop people in the team by ensuring their critical competencies are maintained and expert knowledge in a specific process control area is developed. • Show influence, negotiation, maturity and emotional intelligence. • Drive high performance culture and innovative thinking. • Operate successfully in a diverse work environment and adhere to Sasol culture and values.
